Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.

So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pauntil there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.

Vice President Johnson, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, President Truman, reverend clergy, fellow citizens:

We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom -- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning -- signifying renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.

The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty. This much we pledge -- and more.

To those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided there is little we can do -- for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder. To those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom -- and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.

教皇乌尔班二世(出生于法国,原名OthodeLagery)作为第一次十字军东征的发起者而被世人所熟知。当他在法国克莱芒举行的宗教会议上宣布十字军东征开始时,发表了这篇演讲稿。

正为大家所知,一个来自波斯的民族,塞尔柱土耳其人已经入侵我们东方兄弟的国家,他们一路攻到地中海,直到布拉?圣乔治,在罗马尼亚,突厥人七次攻打基督教徒,七次获胜,又侵占了我们的圣地——耶路撒冷,他们在大肆蹂躏上帝的国度,毁坏基督教堂,掳杀虔诚的上帝子民,污辱贞洁的妇女,贪婪地饮著受洗儿童的鲜血。

如果让那些魔鬼的奴隶统治主所信任的子民,那将是件多麼令人羞耻的事。

如果你们仍然无动於衷,上帝的信徒就会在这次入侵中牺牲更多,所以我要勉励你们,也恳求你们——不是我,是主亲自勉励你们,基督的使者们,督促一切有封爵等级之人,乃至所有骑士、士兵、富人与穷人,都必须迅速予以东方基督教徒援助。

把凶恶的民族赶出我们的领土,我告诉在座的各位,也通知不在场的人:这是主的旨意。

让我们投入一场神圣的战争——一场为主而重获圣地的伟大的十字军东征吧!让一切争辨和倾轧休止,登上赴圣地的征途吧!从那个邪恶的种族手中夺回圣地吧!”

那个地方(耶路撒冷),如同《圣经》所言,是上帝赐与以色列后嗣的,遍地流著奶和蜜,黄金宝石随手可拾。耶路撒冷是大地的中心,其肥沃和丰富超过世界上的一切土地,是另一个充满欢娱快乐的天堂。

我们这里到处都是贫困、饥饿和忧愁,连续七年的荒年,到处都是凄惨的景象,老人几乎死光了,木匠们不停地钉著棺材,母亲们悲痛欲绝地抱著孩子的尸体。东方是那麼的富有,金子、香料、胡椒俯身可拾,我们为什麼还要在这里坐以待毙呢?”

一个遭人蔑视,受撒旦支配的堕落民族,若是战胜了一心崇拜上帝,以身为基督教徒而自豪的民族,会是多大的耻辱啊!如果你们找不到配得上基督教徒这个身份的士兵,主该怎样责备你们啊!

让那些从前十分凶狠地因私事和别人争夺的人,现在为了上帝去同异教徒战斗吧!——这是一场值得参加,终将胜利的战斗。

不要因为爱家庭而拒绝前往,因为你们应爱上帝胜於爱家庭;不要因为恋故乡而拒绝前往,因为全世界都是__的故土;不要因为有财产而拒绝前往,因为更大的财富在等待著你们。”

让那些过去做强盗的人,现在去为基督而战,成为基督的骑士吧!

让那些过去与自己的亲朋兄弟争战不休的人,现在理直气壮地同那些亵渎圣地的野蛮人战斗吧!

让那些为了微薄薪水而拼命劳动的人,在东方的征途中去取得永恒的报酬吧!

身心交瘁的人,将会为双倍的荣誉而劳动,他们在这里悲惨穷困,在那里将富裕快乐。

现在他们是主的敌人,在那里将成为主的朋友!”

毫不迟疑地到东方去吧!凡是要去的人都不要再等待,赶紧回去料理好事务,筹备足经费,置办好行装,於冬末春初之际,奋勇地踏上向东的征途!”

本著主赐予我的权柄,我郑重宣布:凡参加东征的人,他们死后的灵魂将直接升入天堂,不必在炼狱中经受煎熬;无力偿还债务的农民和城市的贫民,可免付欠债利息,出征超过一年的可免纳赋税。

凡动身前往的人,假如在途中,不论在陆地或海上,或在反异教徒的战争中失去生命的,他们的罪愆将在那一瞬间获得赦免,并得到天国永不朽灭的荣耀。”

向著东方出发吧!不要犹豫,不要彷徨,为荣耀我主,去吧!把十字架染红,作为你们的徽号,你们就是‘十字军’,主会保佑你们战无不胜!”」
